LOOKING BACK ON THREE YEARS OF SOCIAL IMPACT:
THE FEDORA EDUCATION PRIZE WINNERS

RESEO Conference in Paris - September 2022

At the end of September 2022, our Expert Partner RESEO held its annual conference at the Philharmonie de Paris and Opéra Comique in Paris, gathering representatives from the European performing arts education sector. Through these inspiring three days conference, RESEO triggered a conversation about new objectives and the diversity of the sector, while exploring new ways of approaching participation in outreach work and how the latter interact with local social ecosystems.

On this special occasion, the three teams leading the FEDORA Education Prize-winning projects came together to discuss social impact and achievements at the Philharmony de Paris. This session brought together Inge Lattre, Artistic Coordinator of Platform K,  FEDORA Education Prize 2021 winner,  Richard Willacy, General Director of Birmingham Opera Company, FEDORA Education Prize 2020 winner, and Ann-Kristin Sofroniou, Associated artist, Education and Audience Participation Department at Greek National Opera, the first winner of the FEDORA Education Prize in 2019.

On Thursday 29  September, FEDORA's Director Edilia Gänz joined a round table with Frédérique Tessier, RESEO's Chair, Stéphanie Deporcq, enoa's General Director, and with Nicholas Payne, Opera Europa's Director and Chair of the Next Stage Grants Jury, on the topic of "What’s Next? Looking to the Future". The session was moderated by Katie Watts, Research and Publications Coordinator at On the Move.

3 EDITIONS OF SOCIAL-IMPACT DRIVEN PROJECTS SUPPORTED BY FEDORA

Co-OPERAtive: An intercultural and collaborative opera hub for young people
Co-OPERAtive: An intercultural and collaborative opera hub for young people
Co-OPERAtive

Led by Greek National Opera (Greece)

FEDORA EDUCATION PRIZE 2019 WINNER

Co-OPERAtive is an opera hub for a mixed group of young Athenians and unaccompanied minor asylum seekers aged 14-18, using opera as a common language, creating the first intercultural youth opera hub in Europe. Since it was awarded the FEDORA Education Prize in 2019, the workshops have been very successful in creating social cohesion among participants. In July 2022, they presented “Untitled For Now: An Old Fable”, a music theatre performance with music by Andys Skordis and directed by Themelis Glynatsis, on 3 July 2022 at Greek National Opera. During the next phase of the project, they will focus on best practice methodology, create an alumni group to boost professional development, and stage final performances on 20 & 21 May 2023.

Participants have stated that “music theater is a way of living from now on” and that it is now “something very important that [they] can also use to express [themselves]”.

GOING FOR GOLD

Led by Birmingham Opera Company
(United Kingdom)

FEDORA EDUCATION PRIZE 2020 WINNER

Going for Gold brought together 10,000 local people with 100 free events and supported 50 diverse emerging artists with unparalleled professional development opportunities in Birmingham. It culminated in a disused factory, with volunteer performers alongside an international cast and the full CBSO, in a ground-breaking production of Wagner’s RhineGold (Das Rheingold) led by the late Artistic Director Graham Vick and Music Director Alpesh Chauhan in August 2021. The programme culminated in a groundbreaking performance which premiered in August 2021 and is now available to stream on Opera Vision.

Overall 63% of participants have stated that the skills they developed in the programme helped them at home or in their social life. One participant stated that their “experience with Rhinegold has been more than [they] could have imagined [...] It has helped [them] so much in [their] performing skills with acting and made [them] really appreciate opera and has strengthened a passion in performing arts.”

Dance training for people with a disability

Led by Platform K (Belgium)

FEDORA EDUCATION PRIZE 2021 WINNER

Dance training for people with a disability is a moving and inspiring programme challenging our society’s generic notion of beauty on stage and claiming how dancers with disabilities are an added value to the contemporary dance scene. Today, the programmes trains over 30 dancers with disabilities, in Ghent, and in Brussels, while working intensively with 7 dancers members of the company full time. The latter get the opportunities to take part in productions and artistic residencies. Currently, Oskar Stalpaert, a dancer of the company with Down syndrome, is starring in “Goldberg Variations”, a piece choreographed by Michiel Vandevelde, and is touring internationally.

Oskar stated that “because people with a disability are at the heart of Platform K, it is unique” as almost no other organisations will give them a chance.
